One of Sarasota County’s top local races effectively moved from November to August when qualifying closed this week, with Democrats falling off the ballot in County Commission District 2 and leaving the seat to be decided in a Republican Primary.

Democrat Andrew Bevan did not qualify, and the other Democrat to file, Robert Miller, who had filed June 10, withdrew — leaving Republican incumbent Mark Smith and his Primary opponent, Kristina Sargent, as the only qualified candidates for the seat. Smith enters with the financial advantage, having raised about $95,000 to roughly $39,000 for Sargent.

Smith was elected to the County Commission in 2022 and serves as Vice Chair this year. A longtime Sarasota resident and founder of Smith Architects in Siesta Key Village, Smith has years of civic involvement with the Siesta Key Association, Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce, All Faiths Food Bank, the Sheriff’s Advisory Board, and Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida, according to his county profile.

Sargent’s entry guarantees Smith a contested Primary. A civil defense attorney representing Florida companies statewide and a former prosecutor, Sargent served 15 years in the Army National Guard after enlisting at age 21, deploying multiple times, including to the Middle East. She worked as a prosecutor in Baltimore before later prosecuting in Sarasota.

Beyond District 2, Republican incumbent Joe Neunder qualified for re-election in District 4. He faces Republican Jim DeNiro in the Primary, while Democrat Julie London has qualified and is uncontested for the Democratic nomination. London has secured a General Election contest for the seat, but the immediate focus is the Republican Primary.

Neunder leads District 4 candidate-account fundraising with more than $128,000 raised. DeNiro has raised more than $72,000 through his candidate account and another $30,000 through Friends of DeNiro, while London has raised about $1,000.

Neunder, a first-term Commissioner, has campaigned as a fiscal conservative and controlled-growth voice. But growth politics remain part of the District 4 backdrop: a political committee supporting him has drawn contributions from prominent development figures this cycle. Conservatives for a Brighter Future has reported about $15,000 raised in 2026 and $282,000 since 2021, including nearly $126,000 on hand.

DeNiro has focused his campaign on affordability, public safety, growth management, and accountability in county government. His 30-year career with the Sarasota Police Department included criminal investigations, narcotics enforcement, patrol operations, traffic and marine units, emergency management, and leading the department’s Underwater Search and Recovery unit.

DeNiro’s campaign showed early momentum, raising about $52,500 through his candidate account and another $26,000 through Friends of DeNiro in the first quarter of 2026. Neunder raised about $34,000 through his candidate account and another $15,000 through Conservatives for a Brighter Future over the same period.

Neunder rebounded in the second quarter, raising nearly $47,000 through his candidate account, while Conservatives for a Brighter Future reported no new contributions but spent nearly $13,000. DeNiro raised nearly $20,000 through his candidate account and another $4,000 through Friends of DeNiro during the quarter.

Sarasota County’s School Board races also took shape after qualifying.

Heidi Brandt, Teresa DeWitt and Jimmy Glover qualified for the District 1 race. Glover enters with more than $102,000 raised, Brandt with about $54,000 and DeWitt with nearly $7,500.

Frank DiCicco and Megan Tennimon qualified for the District 4 race after Scarlett Hess withdrew earlier this year. Tennimon has raised just over $40,000 to about $9,000 for DiCicco.

Beth Mayberry and Michelle Pozzie qualified for the District 5 race. Mayberry has raised just over $54,000 to more than $9,500 for Pozzie.

The races come as Sarasota Republicans focus on protecting the conservative majority on the board. The Republican Party of Sarasota County previously endorsed Brandt in District 1, DiCicco in District 4 and Pozzie in District 5. But Glover, Tennimon and Mayberry each lead their races in money raised, setting up a test of whether party backing or campaign resources carry more weight. The picture is more complex than the candidate accounts alone: Fair Governance For Florida, a committee backing Glover, Tennimon and Mayberry, has reported about $80,000 raised.

Qualifying also decided several races outright. Shannon Hankin qualified without opposition for County Judge, Group 4. Two Charter Review Board races were decided without opposition: Matthew Brockway in District 2 and Jordan Keller in the District 2 two-year term. Three Sarasota Memorial Hospital Board candidates also qualified without opposition: Bridgette Fiorucci in Central District Seat 2, Patricia Maraia in Southern District Seat 1 and Tracy Knightin Southern District Seat 2.

Several Charter Review Board races remain contested. District 1 features Republicans Nicholas Altier, Alexandra Coeand William VanAllen. District 3 features Republicans Arthur Adams and Ali Hopper, along with Democrat Jim Tate. District 4 features Republican Taylor Collins and Democrat Robin Williams. District 5 features Republicans Erin Halstead and Andrew Sias, along with Democrat Andrea Doria Kale.

For the Hospital Board, the Northern District Seat 1 race features Republicans Brad Baker and Bill Woeltjen, and the Northern District Seat 2 race features Republicans Tara Butler and Kenneth Evans.

A handful of Community Development District races also drew contests. The Primary Election is scheduled for Aug. 18, the General Election for Nov. 3.
