New College of Florida has selected Sarasota resident and world-renowned high-wire artist Nik Wallenda to deliver the keynote address at its 2026 commencement ceremony.
The college announced Wallenda — a seventh-generation member of the famed Flying Wallendas and holder of 13 Guinness World Records — will speak to graduates May 22 at the Sarasota campus.
Wallenda, who also owns the Big Apple Circus and is a bestselling author, lives in Sarasota and remains closely tied to the region’s cultural identity.
New College of Florida sits on land once belonging to circus magnate Charles Ringling. Ringling and his brother John brought the Wallenda family to the United States in 1928. Karl Wallenda and his troupe arrived in Sarasota in 1928 they stayed at Ringling’s Ca’ d’Zan mansion, a bayfront estate that anchors the New College campus today.
Wallenda, widely known as the “King of the Wire,” has completed high-profile tightrope walks over Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, an active volcano in Nicaragua and above Times Square. His performances have drawn millions of viewers and helped cement his reputation as both an entertainer and a speaker focused on discipline and preparation .
The college emphasized that Wallenda’s appeal goes beyond spectacle. His major crossings often involve years of planning, including engineering assessments, legal coordination and safety preparation. New College President Richard Corcoran said Wallenda’s message aligns with life lessons graduates will face after leaving campus.
“Nik Wallenda is one of Sarasota’s most recognized figures, and his connection to this campus runs deeper than most people realize,” Corcoran said. “Our graduates are stepping into a world that will ask everything of them. There is no better person to speak to preparation, faith, and commitment than Nick, putting it to test at the highest possible level.”
