U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick may not be in Congress anymore. But she has kept her Federal Elections Commission account open, and she has filed for re-election with the state of Florida.
The Miramar Democrat resigned her seat in Congress on Tuesday, April 21. That resignation was effective at 1:30 p.m. that day, a half hour before the House Ethics Committee was expected to meet and recommend her expulsion.
But her resignation came four days after she filed paperwork with the Florida Division of Elections to seek a third full term representing Florida’s 20th Congressional District. State officials acknowledged receiving the paperwork the day she resigned. A campaign aide told NOTUS the former Congresswoman was still running for the seat.
Meanwhile, she has maintained her federal campaign accounts. She filed a statement of candidacy with the FEC in December 2024, shortly after the close of the last election cycle, when she won unopposed. She hasn’t changed her status as a federal candidate since vacating her seat.
This time around, though, she has drawn stiff opposition, with more candidates potentially waiting to jump in now that she is tainted by scandal.
An adjudication panel in Congress found Cherfilus-McCormick guilty in March of 25 violations of House rules, most centered around the alleged siphoning of more than $5 million in disaster relief to her 2021 congressional campaign. She also faces a criminal indictment around those allegations and has a trial set in federal court in February.
Cherfilus-McCormick raised more than $356,000 toward her re-election effort through March, while she still held office, but her fundraising largely evaporated after her indictment. She closed the first quarter of the year with a little more than $11,000.
Meanwhile, Democratic opponent Elijah Manley raised almost $780,000 through March, and ended the quarter with almost $23,000 in cash.
Former Broward Mayor Dale Holness has also raised almost $307,000 and wrapped with around $313,000, including some leftover from his last run. In 2021, Holness lost a Democratic Primary for the then-open seat to Cherfilus-McCormick by just five votes.
