Florida has banned sanctuary cities and counties, and U.S. Sen. Rick Scott is attempting to rally the Senate to make that policy nationwide with two newly filed bills.

The Unifying American Security Interests (UASI) Act and the Sanctuary Jurisdiction Event Security Enhancement Act are intended to firm up Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policy by codifying enforcement priorities, including ensuring that resources are devoted to the agency’s core mission.

“Democrat politicians are putting illegal aliens first and the American people last, harboring criminals in sanctuary cities where they refuse to enforce our laws,” Scott said.

The UASI Act would allocate at least 30% of all UASI grants to five National Priority Areas.

These include protecting soft targets, supporting DHS task forces, boosting cybersecurity, border security and election security.

Grants would be contingent on cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement via honoring 287(g) detainers, training together and sharing information.

The Sanctuary Jurisdiction Event Security Enhancement Act would tie funding to full compliance with immigration law. Funding deemed to be for sanctuary jurisdictions would be blocked and reallocated to border enforcement.

“President (Donald) Trump is doing his part by securing the border, now Congress must pass my bills to hold sanctuary cities and states accountable by withholding federal tax dollars until they cooperate with federal law enforcement,” Scott urged.

These bills’ introductions are timed as Scott participates in Wednesday’s confirmation hearing of Markwayne Mullin, the administration’s second nominee to helm DHS. Scott supports the nomination and believes DHS needs more funding.
