Poll: Scott Singer unpopular in Boca Raton, even as Jared Moskowitz over performs in new CD 25

A new poll shows former Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer losing badly on his home turf in Florida’s newly drawn 25th Congressional District. Approved by the Legislature last week and designed to favor Republicans in November, the coastal district stretches from Miami Beach to Delray Beach in Palm Beach County.

If Boca Raton voters truly prefer an unknown Republican over their former Mayor, as the poll suggests, it suggests Singer may struggle to hold this seat for Republicans.

The survey, conducted this week by Beacon Insights among 461 registered voters, shows Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, who is likely to run in the new CD 25, leading Singer by a commanding 10 percentage points (43% to 33%) in a hypothetical matchup. By contrast, Moskowitz holds only a narrow 1.6-point edge over another Republican, George Moraitis, underscoring a stark disparity in how Boca voters view the two GOP options.

Moskowitz’s strong performance against both Republicans reflects a combination of crossover appeal — driven by a more moderate record — and broader dissatisfaction with the current administration, even in a city that has leaned Republican. It also comes in one of the more conservative parts of the district, an area Moskowitz lost by nearly nine percentage points in 2024. But the scale of Singer’s deficit goes well beyond national trends.

Underwater at home

Singer’s core political problem appears to start with his track record as a former Mayor. The poll finds his job approval underwater by 10 percentage points, at 35% approval to 45% disapproval, while his personal favorability is even weaker at -19 percentage points (28% favorable to 47% unfavorable).

That places Singer in a more precarious position than even President Donald Trump in Boca Raton, where Trump’s favorability stands at 45% favorable and 54% unfavorable (-9%). Yet while Trump’s numbers help explain a broader Republican drag, they do not account for the scale of Singer’s deficit.

Moskowitz, meanwhile, posts a positive job approval rating (+9%), reinforcing his ability to win over independents and even some Republicans in a city he previously lost.

A candidate-specific problem

The contrast between the two Republicans is telling. While Moraitis keeps the race essentially even, Singer trails badly. That gap strongly suggests Singer’s weakness is not simply a function of national political headwinds.

Instead, the data points to a localized backlash — one rooted in the defining issue of Singer’s tenure: development.

A striking 63.5% of voters say Boca Raton has “too much development,” cutting directly against the record Singer championed as Mayor.

That sentiment appears to crystallize most sharply around the controversial One Boca development project, a proposal backed by Singer that would have leased public land — including portions of Memorial Park, a park dedicated to World War II veterans — to private developers. Voters rejected the plan in March by a nearly 3-to-1 margin, a rare landslide in local politics. In the same election, all of Singer’s allies, including incumbents, lost their elections by large margins.

The data hypothesizes Boca Raton, long a Republican anchor, may instead be the area that puts CD 25 out of reach for the GOP this cycle.
