Dems did it because even after losing the election, the left was demanding that Democrats “do something.” And so they shut the government down for record time to fight over something that had not even been eliminated yet and was a small fraction of the $7 trillion federal budget they need to appropriate. It was to stage talking points and they accomplished that.
